How the Journal is intended to work, step by step, using one fictional call. This is an illustration: nothing here can be typed, saved, uploaded, or submitted.

1. Record what happened in your own words
What happened, in your own words Phone rang while I was at work. A man said he was with Acme Solar and that I qualified for a free home energy review. I asked him to stop calling. I think it was around 3:15.
How it reached you Phone call (selected) Text message Voicemail
What this step is for
- Write it down while it’s fresh, in plain language.
- Approximate is fine. Say “about” or “I think” when you’re not sure.
- Later steps add to this entry. They don’t replace it.
2. Preserve the evidence you already have
Displayed identifier (212) 555-0147 · “SOLAR SVCS”
Claimed identity Caller claimed to represent Acme Solar.
Important exact words “I’m with Acme Solar.” (remembered exactly)
Evidence you already have call-log-2026-03-03.png
What this step is for
- Record the number or name your phone displayed, labeled as displayed, not as verified.
- Record who the caller said they were, as a claim: “Caller claimed to represent Acme Solar,” not “Acme Solar called me.”
- Put words you remember exactly in quotation marks. Label paraphrases.
- Keep screenshots, voicemails, and texts you already have, as they are.
3. Review what is known and what isn’t
Responsible organization Known Unknown (selected)
Correction Original: “around 3:15” · Corrected: about 2:40 p.m. · Reason: call-log screenshot shows 2:41 p.m. The original stays in the record.
Contradiction Caller said “we spoke last month.” I have no memory or record of an earlier call.
What this step is for
- Mark what you don’t know as Unknown. That’s a complete answer.
- Add corrections next to the original, with a reason.
- Keep contradictions visible instead of choosing a side.
4. Your Communication Record
The Journal is intended to organize everything above into one Communication Record. Keep, print, or share your Communication Record when you choose.
